Introduction to Kaii Higashiyama<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kaii Higashiyama was a recipient of the Order of Culture and one of the most representative Nihonga painters of the Sh\u014dwa era.
He had a deep commitment to shades of green and blue, and the distinctive blue he painted is often referred to as \u201cHigashiyama Blue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1908<\/strong>\u2003Born in Yokohama
1911<\/strong>\u2003Moved to Nishide-ch\u014d, Kobe, at the age of three
1921<\/strong>\u2003Entered Hy\u014dgo Prefectural Second Kobe Middle School
1926<\/strong>\u2003Entered the Nihonga (Japanese painting) Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts)
1929<\/strong>\u2003Submitted Autumn in the Mountain Country<\/em> (destroyed in the war) to the 10th Teiten Exhibition; first submission and first acceptance
1931<\/strong>\u2003Graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts; continued in the research program and studied under Tomoaki Y\u016bki
1933<\/strong>\u2003After completing the research program, went to Germany to study
1940<\/strong>\u2003Married Sumi, the eldest daughter of Kotora Kawasaki
1943<\/strong>\u2003Formed the Kokudo-kai (National Land Society) with Kotora Kawasaki, Ky\u016bjin Yamamoto, and others
1947<\/strong>\u2003Exhibited Afterglow<\/em> at the 3rd Nitten Exhibition; received Special Selection and the work was purchased by the government
1950<\/strong>\u2003Became a juror for the Nitten Exhibition, and continued to serve in this role thereafter
1956<\/strong>\u2003Received the Japan Art Academy Prize for K\u014dkon<\/em> (Twilight Light), exhibited at Nitten
1960<\/strong>\u2003Completed the mural Scenes of the Four Seasons: Sun and Moon<\/em> for the T\u014dg\u016b Palace (now the Akasaka Palace)
1965<\/strong>\u2003Elected a member of the Japan Art Academy
1969<\/strong>\u2003Received the Order of Culture and was honored as a Person of Cultural Merit
1972<\/strong>\u2003Painted Spring Dawn<\/em> to be presented to Chairman Mao Zedong by the Japanese government upon the normalization of Japan\u2013China relations
1999<\/strong>\u2003Passed away<\/p>\n\n\n\n
